Presentation title
Inducing altermagnetism in multiferroic BiFeO3
Lucas Caretta is the Howard M. Reisman ā76 Pā09 Assistant Professor of Engineering and Physics at Brown University, where he leads the Laboratory for Atomic-Scale Design of Quantum Materials. His research focuses on creating and controlling emergent electronic and magnetic states through atomic-scale materials synthesis, with an emphasis on complex oxides, multiferroics, altermagnets, ferroelectrics, and spin-orbit phenomena. His group uses epitaxy, dimensional confinement, and interfacial symmetry engineering to access phases and functionalities that are not available in bulk materials, with applications spanning low-power computing, spintronics, and energy storage. Caretta received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and subsequently completed postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley before joining Brown in 2022. His research has been recognized with an NSF CAREER Award, the IUPAP Early Career Scientist Prize in Magnetism, and the International Workshop on Oxide Electronics Prize for Excellence in Research.
